The scenic drive to Ballarat will take approximately an hour and a quarter by car from Kyneton through the lovely townships of Daylesford and Creswick and on to the Midland Highway(A300). Ballarat is Victoria's largest inland city and started back in 1838 when a squatter called William Yuille camped on the shores of Lake Wendouree. The name itself was derived from "Balla" "Arat" which means resting place.
Gold was discovered in 1851 near Ballarat by John Dunlop and James Regan. By the following year there were around 20,000 diggers settled in the Ballarat Goldfields. Between 1863 & 1870 Ballarat grew from a town to a city due to the population explosion caused by the gold rush.
The Gold Museum presents the story of Ballarat from its earliest days through to European settlement and tells the story of the impact on Ballarat from the gold rush.
